Social Wellness Club · Liberty Village
The YYZ Take
There is no other gym in downtown Toronto that operates at this scale. Altea Active fills 89,000 square feet across two floors of the Novus building at 25 Ordnance Street in Liberty Village, and the size is the first thing you notice. The ceilings are high, the sightlines are long, and the space between things is generous in a way that most Toronto fitness facilities simply are not. It never feels like a place you need to fight for a machine or wait for a rack. That spaciousness is the baseline offer, and everything else is built on top of it.
The Tree Lounge is the social heart of the club – a sprawling communal area centred on live-edge wood tables and a full indoor tree, with a 675-gallon fish tank along one wall and enough seating to function as a genuinely comfortable co-working space. It is the kind of room that makes you want to arrive early and stay late, which is clearly the intention. Surrounding it are the amenities that make Altea feel less like a gym and more like a club: a full-service Starbucks, Ah So Sushi, a smoothie bar, and Catalyst Kitchen and Cocktails, a members-only restaurant and lounge with a sustainable menu and live entertainment.
The fitness floor is serious without being intimidating. Ten Olympic lifting platforms, 150 strength and cardio machines running Technogym equipment, and five boutique studios covering HIIT, boxing, barre, and hot yoga in a 2,500 square foot studio with three fireplaces. The cycling studio is the largest in Canada: 75 Technogym bikes arranged in six tiers under a 285-inch screen and surround-sound speakers, with colour-shifting overhead lights that respond to the music. It is one of the more genuinely impressive rooms in any Toronto fitness facility.
The recovery and wellness amenities are where Altea pulls furthest ahead of the competition. The KLAFS Sanarium is a hybrid sauna, the KLAFS Polaris is a dedicated ice room, and the Himalayan salt lounge offers halotherapy for those who make that part of their routine. A 25-metre lap pool and two hydrotherapy pools round out the aquatics offering. For anyone who wants to go further, the Somadome meditation pod provides 20-minute light therapy sessions.
The entertainment layer is what distinguishes Altea from every other premium gym in the city. The Topgolf Swing Suites are rentable simulator bays that can recreate 84 courses worldwide or run virtual sports including baseball, hockey, football, and soccer. They seat up to nine people per bay with full access to the Catalyst food and drinks menu. Adjacent to this is a proper duckpin bowling alley with four lanes, billiard tables, air hockey, and pinball machines. It is an adult recreation floor attached to a gym, which sounds absurd until you are in it and realize how well it works as a reason to actually show up and stay.
The complimentary parking is not a minor point. Two hours of free parking in Liberty Village, included with every membership, is the kind of practical detail that changes daily behavior. For anyone driving in from anywhere near the city, it removes the friction of the visit entirely.
