Sauna & Ice Bath · Leslieville, Toronto
Alter draws a crowd that actually looks like Toronto. Not the curated wellness-influencer version of the city — the real one. You'll find people of different ages, different body types, different reasons for being there. It makes the whole experience feel less performative and more grounded in what a shared space is supposed to feel like. If you've ever walked into a sauna spot and felt like you accidentally stumbled into someone's brand shoot, Alter is the corrective.
The cold circuit at the Leslieville location is more varied than you might expect. There are two large cold plunges set to different temperatures, so you can ease in or go straight to the deep end depending on where you're at. There's also an ice bucket on a string mounted above you — pull it, and a cascade of cold water drops over your head and shoulders. It's a different sensation from submersion and a nice option mid-session or between rounds. The dry lounge — the room in this photo — is where you land after: an L-shaped couch with actual cushions, floor pillows, a wooden coffee table, books on a shelf, a paper lantern overhead, and a mountain mural on the wall. Complimentary tea is available, and the space invites you to actually stay and decompress rather than funnel you toward the exit. That unhurried quality changes the entire shape of the visit.
What sets Alter apart from most of the competition is the shower situation. The private showers are genuinely good — well-designed, unhurried, not an afterthought. And they stock Sistine body oil, which is a considered touch that you'll notice. It's the kind of amenity that signals someone thought carefully about the post-session experience rather than just the experience itself.
The instructor-led classes (Rebalance, Energize, Unwind, Sisu) are real, but they don't come with the theatrical production value you might expect from other spots in the city. No smoke machines, no DJ sets between rounds. The facilitation is quieter and more purposeful — breathwork and guidance woven into the hot–cold cycle without feeling like a performance. For people who find the bigger productions a bit much, or who just want the thermal benefits without the choreography, this is the lane Alter occupies and it occupies it well.
Alter's booking confirmation tells you to just bring a bathing suit — and while that's technically all you need, you'll be much better set up if you bring a few extras. Pack waterproof slippers (the floor between the sauna, ice baths, and lounge gets wet), an essential oil you like (a few drops on the bench or your pulse points during rest goes a long way), and your face care products for after your shower. The heat opens your pores and the post-session window is a good one — don't waste it on a bare face. The private showers are stocked with Sistine body oil, but your own skin routine is worth bringing.
