Indoor Climbing · Downsview Park
The YYZ Take
True North Climbing has been operating in the Downsview Park Sports Centre since 2010, housed in what was once part of a Canadian Air Force base. The ceilings are high because aircraft hangar ceilings are high, which makes True North Toronto's tallest indoor climbing facility with top-rope and lead routes reaching 36 feet. That height is not incidental. It changes how a route feels to climb, creates more room to set interesting movement, and gives the gym a sense of scale that newer, lower-ceiling facilities simply cannot replicate.
The setting is what climbers talk about first. Route setting is the invisible craft that determines whether a gym feels worth returning to, and True North has consistently maintained a reputation among Toronto's climbing community as the best in the city. The problems are thoughtful, the movement is creative, and the difficulty range is wide enough to keep both beginners and advanced climbers engaged on the same visit. In recent years the gym shifted from the V-grade grading system to a colour-coding system for bouldering, which makes the grades more visually intuitive and approachable for newer climbers finding their feet.
The range of climbing available is genuinely comprehensive: 80 top-rope routes, 15 lead-only routes, 12 auto-belay stations, and over 100 boulder problems, plus two slacklines for those who want a different kind of balance challenge. The auto-belays are a particular asset for solo climbers who want to get on the roped walls without needing a partner. The gym also has a climbing-specific training area and a weight room, making it a viable full-session destination rather than just a place to tick problems.
The standout physical feature is the stalactite: a massive structure that hangs down from the 36-foot ceiling and stops just two and a half feet above the padded floor. It accommodates up to four climbers at once and is something no other Toronto gym has. Experienced climbers use it to practice the specific body tension and foot technique that stalactite-style problems demand. First-timers stare at it and wonder what they've gotten into. Both reactions are correct.
True North is unambiguously family-friendly, with youth programming, birthday parties, day camps, and weekend drop-in sessions for kids. It is also one of the few Toronto climbing gyms that genuinely caters to all ages without making experienced adult climbers feel like they are sharing space with a supervised playground. The transit situation is the honest downside: Downsview Park is a drive for most of the city, but the ample free parking means arriving by car is effortless. If you have access to a vehicle, the trip is worth it.
